I’ve found that it’s not great for either if you’re wearing boots with an aggressive sole pattern. What works best for my boots is those hedgehogs with the stiff bristles across their back.
Edit: I realized that my description is probably pretty confusing to anyone who hasn’t seen one before. I’m talking about these:
