MimicJar@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•68-year-old congresswoman says she's retiring to 'set a better example' amid concern over aging politicians0·4 months agoThe summary of this article is misleading, and I hit a paywall before being able to read the whole article.
She announced her retirement back in March 2024, https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/27/annie-kuster-retiring-house/ and did not run in the 2024 election.
This specific announcement is that one of the reasons is she is retiring is to allow younger folks a chance to lead.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•people who work in robotics, which one do you think is more efficient generally, polyped or biped?English0·5 months agoI always figured bipedal was to make robots adapt to do things humans do where humans do things.
So for a factory floor, bipedal might not make sense. But what about delivering packages to houses? Navigating a home to help someone or collect something? These types of robots are designed to be general purpose.
If you own a factory or wearhouse, ideally you design them with robots in mind. Of course until you can do that something more generally purpose might be better.

I would not use the specific word “vaccine” when talking with Trump. I don’t think Trump actually has an opinion on vaccines, but many of his supporters do.
You just phrase it as “Malaria control” and then do whatever you want.
We can actually probably watch this play out depending on the specific words Trump and RFK use in the next month or so.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•Trump says Microsoft's Bill Gates has asked to visit him in Florida0·5 months agoProblem being, Trump’s ear consistently gets re-bent by the last thing he heard.
Which is why the trick is to bend the ear no one else is bending. Bring up a topic no one else is taking about and that most other ear benders don’t care about.
For example Malaria control is an area the Gates Foundation donates to. Generally speaking no one “pro Malaria” and no one in the US is focused on it as a wedge issue. So you talk to Trump about Malaria for an hour and get him to donate or otherwise help the Gates Foundation. It doesn’t matter what the Foundation actually does after that. Trump gets to make a tweet about protecting the US from Malaria, sign a few bills and pretend to be a hero.
Keep in mind without Trump this all would have happened anyway. He isn’t adding any value. The money/help would have likely come anyway, this just ensures that Trump doesn’t fuck it up. Essentially the pomp is required for a Trump presidency.
As a bonus for Trump, if Malaria ever becomes a problem in the US he can blame the Gates Foundation. It will likely be his fault, but he has a scapegoat.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Tawny Newsome Says Live Action Star Trek Workplace Comedy Will Explore Life Outside The FederationEnglish0·5 months agoWe don’t need a comedy, or a romance, or a drama, thriller, sitcom, etc. spin-off of Star Trek.
That is exactly what I want to see. The Star Trek universe is one filled with such hope, and I want to see that in a day to day capacity.
I think Lower Decks handled it perfectly and if the same crew can produce a live action show in a slightly different scenario then I’m in.
Besides one show isn’t going to kill Star Trek. Star Trek has some real stinkers out there (and a new one is coming in January).
I’ve enjoyed watching it week to week but I’m looking forward to convincing someone else to watch it and being able to binge it.
Some shows benefit from week to week, and some from being bingeable, this is definitely one that will be great to watch in an evening.
Exactly.
You can’t just watch the best of something and then never watch anything else. The Goonies will forever be excellent, but Explorers has more sci-fi, Time Bandits has more Pythons, Stand By Me is more mature/growing, The Never Ending Story is more fantasy.
They’re all good, even if one is best, seeing them all is still worth your time.
Neel is my hero.
Also just because Goonies is better doesn’t mean this isn’t great.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•Best of Steam 2024 - the top performing games on steam, including best sellers on Steam Deck9·5 months agoI can’t say I’ve ever cared about how a game looks.* Sure maybe it’s worth discussing, but it’s always the last thing on my list.
I played BG3 (Once, all the way, second time up to act 2) exclusively on my Steam Deck in handheld mode. Sure Act 3 has a little bit of lag, but nothing that ever bothered me. All the characters in the game were unique, I know Gale from Karlach from Lae’zel.
*(Discussion about art style or artistic choice being different, Pixel vs cell-shaded vs realistic etc)

Per Biden’s statement,
These commutations are consistent with the moratorium my Administration has imposed on federal executions, in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder.
In which case, Robert Gregory Bowers, Dylann Roof, & Dzhokhar Tsarnaev all fit those exceptions.
Interestingly (morbidly?) all of these happened in the last 10 years.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Games@sh.itjust.works•The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom had this year's most revelatory puzzle itemEnglish0·5 months agoAnd a big problem in this game is that it’s a pain to switch echoes all the time
It really really is. It’s one of the things I noticed in the trailer and just hoped they would have a solution for once I got to play the game.
The game has a hundred or so echoes, and you can solve puzzles in different ways, but some require a very specific echo and some require any, so you basically just use the same half dozen echoes. When you have to switch, it sucks, and so when you don’t have to switch you just spam water block or whatever.
It seems like the devs just implemented the echo switching as is and assumed they’d fix it later… But they never did.
It’s a fun game but the chances of me replaying it are near zero. Skyward Sword had a similar problem with Fi, although I understand they’ve mostly fix that in the remaster.
Excellent couch co-op, which is a rarity nowadays.

MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Star Wars@lemmy.world•Dave Filoni is currently writing Ahsoka season two, which is set to begin filming next year0·5 months agoIf by prolonged break you mean 3 month summer, that’s less than the average of 4 months we get now.
Also as a subscriber, yes I want new things. I’m paying for new things. It doesn’t need to be new Star Wars and Disney (in this case) has plenty of brands that they can offer me a wide variety of content, new content, every month (ish).
Now in terms of quality, you can produce multiple things. Mando/Ahsoka, that’s Dave Filoni & Jon Favreau. Acolyte, that’s Leslye Headland. Skeleton Crew, that’s by Jon Watts & Christopher Ford. They’re not putting all this work on one person. It’s spread out. These people are given the time to produce good work.
To be clear I have plenty to criticize about the content we’re getting. But I don’t feel fatigue. I think we’re getting the content people intended and I think we’re getting it at a good pace.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Star Wars@lemmy.world•Dave Filoni is currently writing Ahsoka season two, which is set to begin filming next year0·5 months agoTV shows traditionally run from fall to spring with a short break for the holidays. They used to be 23 episodes. That’s a third more content in total and running over at least twice as much time. I don’t recall anyone thinking the regular TV schedule was oversaturating.
MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Star Wars@lemmy.world•Dave Filoni is currently writing Ahsoka season two, which is set to begin filming next year0·5 months agooversaturating
8 episodes every six months is oversaturation?
- Skeleton Crew, December 2024
- The Acolyte, June 2024
- Ahsoka, August 2023
- The Mandalorian Season 3, March 2023

MimicJar@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•TikTok set to be banned in the US after losing appealEnglish0·5 months agoBecause it’s bad if China has the information. It’s fine if “US entity” had the information. The ban is ultimately fake. No one banning the app cares about TikTok, they just hate that China is getting the information they want. What will happen is some US based company, Oracle last time, but someone like that will buy a sufficient enough stake in the company and the ban will not happen. It will be declared “safe” and the data will go to a US controlled entity, but also still secretly to China. (The later will be revealed years later, to the shock of no one.)
I think I’ve seen this before and I know the solution. Time to use the “Bugs Bunny Maneuver”.
