I don’t blame you. It’s the only thing I’m keeping a Win10 dual-boot for right now, and to their credit, it does work quite well in Windows. We’ve had a ton of fun with our set.

In the meantime, I’m keeping up with the project but not actively tinkering with it myself, because it’s exciting but also not quite there yet. It’s at least given me hope that it can be done though! I’m confident we’ll see significant gains sooner rather than later. Hats off to them. (Once my income stabilizes I’ll gotta pitch them some funds…)

Envision has made it VERY convenient to get set up, but the whole process still saps more time than “Fire it up and play.” So maybe play with it at some point, but either way definitely keep your ear to the ground. :)

I’m hoping in the future we’ll get to use it for things like Godot XR or Blender integration. :D

So, last time I tried, VR is a little bumpy right now. I have a Samsung Odyssey+ set that’s simply fantastic…if Microsoft weren’t deliberately turning it into a paperweight.

Wonderful strides are being made by the FOSS community however!

I main OpenSUSE Tumbleweed these days, and I used this awesome bit of software called “Envision” that attempts to automate the “retrieve all the correct dependencies and build the thing” stuff.

For being so early, I was very impressed, especially since I’m no pro at compiling software and navigating Git branches and stuff. This is relatively turnkey. (In a tinkery Linux way, anyway lol)

I was able to get the headset to function this way, as in, fire up a game and see through it and look around, and you can enable hand tracking, which is really neat! But I struggled to actually select or interact with anything using it.

The real tough nut to crack is the controllers, but they have made some strides there too! There’s a branch that enables controller support, but it’s VERY janky right now, like, unusuable, but it’s cool that it’s going somewhere!

The other challenge is smoothness. Expect a little jitter here and there, it’s not so buttery smooth like it was running WMR because they did a LOT of fancy proprietary compensation and prediction code sorta stuff to make that experience work. (And to the surprise of absolutely no one, they refuse to let us folks have it.)

For Elite or DCS, since you’d just be using mouse and keyboard or a standard controller or something anyway, the headset part MIGHT be enough for you! I’d definitely encourage you to give it a shot and have a little patience with it to see if it can be acceptable for you where it’s at right now.

Unless you’re savvy building a bunch of stuff yourself, I’d say check out Envision first, and use that to build Monado for your Reverb and see how that works out for you.

Honestly I have a ridiculous pile o’ games like a lot of us do, and I’ve yet to find something (that’s not VR) that I cannot play .

For reference I’m running OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with a 30 series Nvidia card. Wayland, two monitors, main is 144hz ultrawide 3440 x 1440, another is 1080p 60hz.

First off there’s a few programs out there to get you “Glorious Eggroll” versions of Proton which add even more stuff Valve can’t distribute in their versions.

Steam works fantastically. Heck, Proton works better than native Linux builds sometimes! Deck playability is an even bigger mark of quality.

Even EA’s silly launcher works. I got Titanfall 2 and that Sims 2 Ultimate they gave away ages ago working like butter.

I also love actually owning my games, so I use Heroic Launcher for GoG titles.

Oh! I even have CD games or old .EXEs windows would refuse to even install anymore! Don’t worry, Linux has got this. I use Bottles to have separate environments for those games to install to and run. Majority of the time it works great but this is where things can get iffy. But hey, Windows wouldn’t run them at all!

Wanna know what made me switch? Vermintide 2 kept giving me BSODs in Windows 10 with some super vague error code that made me think “Oh crap, please don’t tell me my GPU is dying.”

Nope! Linux ran it with zero probs once I fixed some small quirk to make their dumb little launcher work.

Cherry on top? All my RGB stuff works with Open RGB or my recently retired Corsair keyboard works with “CKB Next”.

The community has made incredible strides. My Win10 partition only exists because it has Windows Mixed Reality, which they’re abandoning. But not to fear, the Monado project is making HUGE improvements.

Give it a shot. I think you’ll be surprised. :)

You’re right! I think…I don’t have a swap partition on this machine. I think I was gonna set up a swap file but that was a bit more involved post-install than I wanted to delve into at the time…

…but I did get ZRAM working, and that’s pretty amazing! It feels like getting more RAM for free haha.

It wasn’t the most absolutely necessary upgrade in the world, but I feel like it gives me more room to get away with dumb things and course correct in things like Blender, and might come in handy down the line since I don’t see myself upgrading much for a while.

I just now upgraded to 64GB of DDR4 from eBay. But that’s because my Blender projects were getting really big and I’d crashed a few times. Linux is awesome but is really scary how it just hard-freezed or mercilessly thrashes when low on memory. 😬

…That and I finally get glorious RGB RAM lighting up my case. :D weee!

For gaming? I haven’t seen that much RAM be usedul yet. And in Blender… likely because I have a crazy amount of undo levels enabled and have Firefox open…a few tabs…maybe more than a few tabs…maybe a lot of tabs…

That’s so cool! Nice work! I feel a certain kinship with anyone who also got tons of 3D printing XP by building, rebuilding, researching, modding, head-scratching, laughing, crying, screaming at an A8 lol.

This here is mostly fire prevention: Basically an updated stock motherboard, better PSU, an aftermarket MOSFET board for safety, thicker gauge wires with ferrule crimps for all the power cables, the bed is now attached directly to the thicker wires by way of crimp connectors.

The printing surface is upgraded to carefully cut and polished picture frame float glass. 😂

Added that sweet fan duct mod, a little Noctua 15mm (because it softened and jammed otherwise LOL), and printed that purple bracket at the library because the plastic decided to literally crumble away.

Also the adjustable Z-stop was nice but the PLA softened so it’s a bit unpredictable, and the right motor will gently slip until it’s engaged so the gantry needs to be leveled every time…I also can’t guarantee that the Z rods are straight anymore because it requires such a Goldilocks level of tension I probably overdid it lol.

Oh yeah, I had to replace the main power cable because the one provided just…had a break in it.

It still works for small jobs though! And it printed all those parts for itself, so that’s kinda the RepRap dream right there right??

Lol I feel like an amazing machine is in here somewhere if I bothered to research custom boards and stuff. The stock bearings are also terrible. But if I can bother someday I’ll stick Klipper on it maybe.

It was a crazy, stressful journey…but I learned a ton of electronics stuff, and how to use a multimeter, and engineering stuff! XD

My Ender3V2’s felt like such a crazy luxury by comparison. 😂

The stock acrylic frame with eventually start bending in on itself from the tension of the belts, causing unpredictable belt sag / slippage / ruined prints…and it’s the A8 so probably a fire somehow. 😂

The EMT pipe frame is crazy sturdy though.

OMV has such a nice Docker management interface too. I really feel spoiled with it.

I was planning on all my services running in ProxMox or something, but my OMV VM handles all of them except PiHole basically lol. OMV is snazzy. :D

I’m so glad it was helpful! You’re very welcome! I try to spread the word since NextCloud’s default photo app…scares people away frankly lol.

I now use an extension to customize the menu, so Memories effectively replaces the default app from a user point of view.

Using Memories in Nextcloud AiO simplifies things a bit, but I seriously consider it NextCloud’s “killer app.” It’s got EXIF editing, albums, user sharing, folder organizing, facial (and object!) recognition done locally, geo tagging map view…all local. The face recognizing stuff isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely good enough for the most part.

It’s also very easy to send to people outside NextCloud, but I run it behind TailScale so it’s not exposed to the open net at all. Copying and sending images through something like Signal also works fine. :)

It even has a neat Android app that sends my pictures to my server whenever I plug my phone in. (And moves them to my SD card in case something goes awry…but I learned I need to manage the cleanup of that part better lol)

Given all the other neat things NextCloud does, I like how it keeps photo managing in one place too.

Gonna also throw in: Nextcloud Memories.

It makes the photo organizing part of NextCloud AMAZING. I’m so happy I got to dump Google Photos for good.

I like that idea, although I think we need some simpler guides as to what exactly one might he getting into if they’re setting up an instance that’s not just a domain name. (Costs, potential usage blowing up, legal issues with content, etc…)

Also, I really think there needs to be a smoother way to navigate between instances. I guess, so you’re still aware of “jumping nodes”, but also don’t feel locked in there. (Although maybe I’m just a newb still haha)

I really appreciate this. I’m stuck awake and exhausted too. My house all voted and did what we could, here in NV, but I hate that nagging feeling that it wasn’t enough.

I’m praying to maintain that fervor, that raging fire to believe in good and fortify against coming evil… But it’s one crisis out of our hands to the next, and I’m just so tired. :(
