  • I saw Major Johnstone, the Harvard Professor who is here to lay the bases of an American History. We discussed the right name of the war. I said that we called it now The War, but that this could not last. The Napoleonic War was The Great War. To call it The German War was too much flattery for the Boche. I suggested The World War as a shade better title, and finally we mutually agreed to call it The First World War in order to prevent the millennium folk from forgetting that the history of the world was the history of war.

    – Charles à Court Repington, September 10, 1918 (with emphasis added)

Historical revisionism happens when someone ignores history because they want to win an argument. Which is what you just did. Which is particularly ridiculous given you were just using that as an analogy to make some other point. But the fact is, that while most people called it “The Great War” while it was ongoing, historians started calling it the “First World War” before the war had ended.

  • Almost nothing in the story line followed through the next two, it was a stand-alone movie. I should have said ‘both of them’ instead of ‘all of them’. Maybe the next one will be filmed in Canada as well.

I don’t know about that… the primary motivation of Riddick in the second one was to help the girl from Pitch Black. She’s in the prison mentioned in Pitch Black because she wanted to get eyes like Riddick had, which was something she asked about in Pitch Black. He finds out where she is from the priest from the first one. The Necromonger plotline was new, but that plotline and the prison plotline felt like they were from different movies. The Necromonger plotline was abandoned in the third movie (which was disappointing since I liked that part) and the third movie has more in common with Pitch Black than the previous Chronicles of Riddick movie.

I think it’s more accurate to say the Necromonger plotline in the second movie was the outlier in the series. Which is unfortunate since I would’ve like to see where that went, but it wasn’t a good fit for a “Vin Diesel is an awesome baddass” kind of movie.

  • Yeah but the others are US companies. They can be regulated. Which they don’t want and they will at least make an effort to get rid of at least the obvious disinformation.

With TikTok, there is no middle ground. Can’t keep them in line with the threat of regulation as they’re a foreign company. Operating in the country that has superseded Russia as the biggest source of disinformation. The only leverage they have is the threat to ban it outright.

Besides, Zuckerberg and Musk live in the US. They don’t want things to get too bad. Though they’re so disconnected from reality they may inadvertently make things bad. But they at least have an incentive to not have the US go to shit.

With TikTok, US cities could burn to the ground and they’ll still be fine. And we see TikTok making people particularly unhinged already.

  • The democrats that stayed home are most certainly in the group I called ignorant Americans. People couldn’t see the difference between Harris and Trump, “ignorant” is being generous.

If people understood how the economy worked at all, then it would have been a strength and she wouldn’t have been on the defensive about it. And do you think the majority of Americans who voted for Trump would have changed their mind if she was running on an “anti-business” platform? Trump who was proposing tariffs would solve inflation?

We literally had a candidate for President telling people to watch her opponents rallies. Why was that? Because the media only wanted to show pundits arguing over something because ratings. Everyone seeing him as the bat-shit lunatic he is doesn’t give them anything to debate. So they had to sane wash what he was saying to give the pundits something to talk about. Harris has to have an economic plan. Trump, well his plan is batshit so don’t talk about it. Why isn’t Harris doing more interviews? Trump… well he’s not doing interviews because he’s too batshit, nothing to discuss there.

But sure believe the media when they blame the democrats for not doing the media’s job. If I were more conspiracy minded I might say they didn’t want to explain anything so the dems would have to explain things via ad spots the media made money from. But never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence.

The media is failing to explain anything because they’ve been too distracted by Trump for a fucking decade. But as long as they can blame their failures on the democrats (which does have an impact on the dems getting elected ya know) they aren’t going to change.

This ain’t new either. I had to learn about how vaccines from a youtuber that plays Mario Maker. Despite the covid vaccine being one of the biggest stories of the decade, they didn’t bother to cover anything about it’s development and testing. It was just Trump Trump Trump Vaccine Trump Trump Trump… Why don’t people trust the vaccine? Why oh why don’t people know that the vaccine is safe?

Same fucking thing this year. Trump Trump Trump TRUMP ELECTED! Trump Trump… why don’t people understand that inflation has been handled and tariffs will only bring it back?

  • The campaign was fine. Americans are the problem. They’re too ignorant.

If we’re going to blame this ignorance on anyone we might consider blaming the media. Odd how we aren’t seeing a lot of articles from the media saying the media failing to give information to people about how bad Trump is. But linked above is something from the media blaming a political campaign for not doing their jobs for them.

Still not doing any introspection about waiting until after the election to explain why Trump’s “economic plan” will be a disaster, huh? Didn’t bother to explain anything about what causes inflation. Wouldn’t want people to think it’s something to do with it being a free market, and not caused by the government. Nope, it’s up to the campaigns to explain economics to people in 30 second TV spots.

So the media will continue blame the Democrats for all the problems, while wondering “why couldn’t the democrats win the election”? Must be the democrats fault! It’s like we’ve always been saying, it’s always their fault! We should never think about what the effect of us blaming one party for everything might be.

But mostly it was just Americans taking democracy for granted. Don’t know what you got until you’ve lost it I guess.

  • So you don’t believe that George Washington owned slaves? Talk about making up a reality in your head.

You were indoctrinated from a young age to believe in the myth of the Founding Fathers. Everything you heard in school, all the the monuments, the faces printed on your currency all reinforce your beliefs. So I understand that it’s not easy to accept that these guys were the Elon Musks and Donald Trumps of their times. But it’s not some dead slave masters that guarantee your rights. This mentality results in apathy and taking rights for granted which made the US susceptible to fascism. Mythologizing a false past leads to people wanting to go back to that false past.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say MAGA is about wanting to go back to full on slavery, but there is a feeling there that people of certain ethnicities should “know their place”. And people certainly “knew their place” when the Founding Fathers were running things didn’t they?

  • Yes, people that already agree with Michael Moore like him. But to anyone that doesn’t already agree with him, he’s smug and obnoxious. I agree with most of what he says, but find him grating, he’s not going to change anyone’s mind about anything.

Both exist in their own circle jerk, and neither groups are able to talk and listen to each other.

The nature of social media. People don’t talk to each other on social media. They talk at each other. People aren’t trying to change people’s minds about anything, they’re writing things to prove to people that are already on “their side” how loyal they are to a cause by insulting those who aren’t. People write their opinions under their own names and what they wrote in the past is always there because nothing on the internet can ever really be deleted. This calcifies people’s opinions. Add followers to the mix then you have your own personal audience that’s there because they like what you’ve said in the past. So there’s a strong disincentive to never change, and a strong incentive to attack those not within the group.

It takes effort to get out of this rut and actually talk to people. Social media has deluded us into thinking that it can result in a positive change, but it’s only endless arguments that accomplish nothing because nobody in the social media rut will ever change. And because people feel like they’re making positive change for dunking on the whateverists that are incompatible with mywhateverism, less happens through more productive channels of activism.

Kinda sad that it takes a murder to break people out of their respective bubbles. And I’m not optimistic about people not returning to their respective bubbles as soon as the next thing to be angry at each other over is offered up.

  • Most of the founding father fucking owned slaves.

Elon Musk writes about rights and freedoms. Thomas Jefferson wrote about right and freedoms. Elon Musk is shit to the workers he gets his wealth from. Thomas Jefferson got his wealth from slaves. Elon Musk sexually harasses his female workers. Thomas Jefferson impregnated his slaves.

Elon Musk and the other billionaires are being 100% consistent with the Founding Fathers you idolize. This is why arguing that these billionaire assholes aren’t “in keeping with the Founding Fathers” is so weak. Deep down we all know that these guys are acting exactly like the Founding Fathers. It really makes sense for so many people to think Trump, Musk and all the other scumbags are like the Founding Fathers because they actually are. They just aren’t like the mythologized Founding Fathers that you believe in. But the Founding Fathers you believe in never existed.

The actual people were just a group of rich slave masters that wanted to take away more land from indigenous people. They wrote some nice words about rights and freedoms to fool people into being willing to die to serve their interests. Which is exactly what MAGA is all about isn’t it? Rich people talking big about rights and freedoms to get people to support them having more power.

  • I’m saying they’re in the same business. Sure Joe Rogan is more successful than Vaush, but they’re doing the same thing.

They both create para-social communities (which is why you feel the need to stick up for him) where they create controversy to generate revenue. Just because you have a para-social relationship with Vaush doesn’t make you any different than those that have a para-social relationship with Joe Rogan.

You honestly think Vaush would turn down a $250M contract with spotify if it were offered?

If you do then be sure go to https://vaush.gg/merch and buy some shit to support your “socialist” hero (who is currently worth over $2M) LOL. Maybe if Vaush has the same level of wealth as Joe Rogan we’ll be living in a socialist paradise, because that’s how things work, right?

    Monetized socialism is the future!
