Canada has been increasingly a “branch plant economy” since the '50s.
Wealthy foreigners swoop in and buy up anything thwy can find.
That’s why so many of the foreign ownership rules were put in originally. Unfortunately, Harper (and other conservative governments) have weakened or eliminated a lot of those rules.
Does that include the judge they arrested?
I cant wait for all the 2nd amendment preppers to fight against this tyranny
I’m sure they’ll get right on that any day now…
I hope your optimism can become reality.
But we thought Trump’s blatant corruption and criminality the first time would be more than enough to keep the Republicans out of power for a few decades…
The real world isn’t binary, bud.
Why does society need to have billionaires?
It doesn’t. In an ideal utopian society there wouldn’t be billionaires.
But, given the reality that billionaires do exist, I’d rather have them using their accumulated wealth on disease curing/prevention than them just sitting on the money or using it to actively fuck over entire populations (like Musk has been doing).
That doesn’t mean Gatws or Buffet are *good billionaires *, it means they are less bad.
Shades of grey exist. Nuance is a real auseful ful thing.
None are preferable.
Yes, that is accepted.
But, given the reality that billionaires do exist, one that spends his money curing diseases is less bad than one who is closing hospitals serving war round populations or actively starving people.
The longer it goes on the easier it becomes.
Retailers are following the money and seeking out more Canadian supply to put on their shelves.
Manufacturers are increasing their output, or are diverting supply fthat they previously sent south.
And regular folks are voting with their wallets and making new buying habits - habits that, once established, will need some impetus to break when/if the US regains its sanity.
Carney provided no indication that his leadership would be any different.
Getting to net zero is a major reoccurring theme in Carney’s book.
His proposal is to use regulatory frameworks to make it be in businesses best interests for them to choose to make better environmental choices.
I think it’s only the prairies that even have coal plants anymore?
Specifically Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Manitoba is also a “hydro powerhouse”. And is also an exporter of hydro to Ontario and the US.
I’m hoping the Albertans aren’t impressed about an Ontario politician parachuting in and “using” them.
This would give the PPC one seat total, and deprive the CPC of their current leader.
Unless the split the vote so effectively that the Liberal or NDP candidate won…
We’re going to find out this summer.
I expect the well known tourist destinations here to be packed.
However in much of rural Alberta you could run a pile of cowpies wearing a blue necktie and win the election.
I’d love to see Albertans reject him as an “Ottawa elite parachute candidate”.
They won’t, of course, but a guy can dream…
What kind of calculus do you think the liberal party has done just now
Carney’s response to the byelection question was basicailly “He can have his byelection if he wants. I’m too busy with more important things to waste time with silly partisan games”
Which makes sense. No need to hand the conservatives a "see the liberals are blocking democracy’ talking point.
I didn’t expect him to voluntarily step down.
I expect the party to follow it’s own damn rules and have the leadership review that their party rules requires after a losing election.
Of course, they could still do that after he inevitably wins in one of the safest seats in the country.
Makes me think they all need to switch to NDP
We’ll see if Nenshi can talk them into that when the next provincial election comes around.
It’s going up every month.
