  • The point of making stuff that lots of people do illegal is that it makes selective enforcement much easier. Protesting hippies in the 60’s? Make weed illegal and you can bust them for that. Plant the weed on them if you have to.

Black folks getting out of line and demanding equal rights? I hear jazz musicians like to do heroin, let’s make that illegal with harsher penalties. Later, do t the same thing for crack cocaine.

“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and Black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

  • The red state police (like state troopers), red city police, county sheriffs, and any number of federal agencies under homeland security and DOJ.

There plenty of personnel available to make the lives of people here both legally and illegally miserable. And remember, the misery is the point.

Directly capturing and imprisoning / deporting only 5% of this population would make a huge impact on inflicting misery and fear.

As far as what people will and won’t do when given orders, almost nobody in this country who works full time has any safety net or nest egg. If you decide to quit your job on principle, many people are less than 6 months away from eviction. That makes it very difficult to stand your mortal ground without solidarity. Blue regions might develop that solidarity. In red regions, seems less likely.

  • Having watched drivers in a traffic backup on the Autobahn neatly organize themselves to leave a lane empty for emergency vehicles even though there were no emergency vehicles in the vicinity, my conclusion is that there’s no fucking way that American drivers have the discipline or sense of social responsibility necessary to handle Autobhan-style driving.
